Should I even use a clear top coat on epoxy floors?

I own auto repair shops. I've tried 3 industrial brands of epoxy (not home store Rustoleum stuff) and each one has lasted less than 1 1/2 years before showing obvious signs of wear. I'm contemplating just skipping the decorative flakes and clear top coat. It seems the top coat is never very durable. They quickly wear down and expose the chips, which end up getting knocked off / worn down until I have bare epoxy. I figure if i skip the flakes and top coat, I'll just have solid epoxy to wear down until it hits bare concrete. So, the wear won't be as evident until we hit concrete. Is the top coat necessary? Is it supposed to be more durable than the epoxy?Should I even use a clear top coat on epoxy floors?
Hello.

I work for Rust-Oleum and have you ever thought about trying the DIY kit?

If you want industrial strength I would suggest using our Professional version, link attched.

With our kit you don't have to add the chips or a clear coat if you prefer not to do so.

If you have any questions feel free to contact our customer service department at 1-800-323-3584.

Thanks and I hope this helps.

  • I'm trying to make a Clear Plastic square (Akrylic, epoxy?)

I'm trying to make a solid, clear cube with a tiny object embedded inside it. I've read about Akrylic, and epoxy, and urathane, but hardly anyone has had the experience. Does anyone know of a webpage or a place where I can locate ';how to'; information and possibly pictures of making this item? Any information would be much appreciated. ThanksI'm trying to make a Clear Plastic square (Akrylic, epoxy?)
The name of the product you want is CASTING AND EMBEDDING RESIN which comes in two parts one is the resin the other the catalyst you mix in to start the hardening process. Fun to use on almost anything from water proof logo hub caps to table tops.

The resin is available through most hardware stores if in Australia Bunnings is where I buy it and it comes under the name of DIGGERS.

Web Site for more info is www.diggersaust.com.au.

Have fun.....I'm trying to make a Clear Plastic square (Akrylic, epoxy?)
As Richard states, what you are looking for is called 'casting resin'. To get the object embedded in the center of the resin, you pour to the halfway mark on the mold, let it cure out. When the first pour is hard, then you add the object, and pour over it.

You can actually embed several objects at different levels, by doing multiple pours.

Here is a yahoo search link with many suppliers of casting resins -

You can also use casting resins to fill voids in wood. That's how I first came across this fun to use product.

    Clear Conductive Epoxy?

Is there a clear, reasonably conductive epoxy available on the market? If so, please list the name of the company and product number. If not, what might I mix into a clear epoxy that would make it both conductive and not opaque?

    THANKS!Clear Conductive Epoxy?
    thermally conductive NO

    electrically conductive NO

    no material which is clear

would remain clear with the added material to make it conduct

UNLESS we are talking about VERY THIN layers

like as used on Space suit visors

thin layer of gold as I recallClear Conductive Epoxy?
I am assuming you are talking about electrically conductive ? If so I have never seen or heard of clear. Most of the epoxies have silver in them to make them conductive. If you are talking about thermally conductive, you may have better luck (although I have not seen that in clear either).

Would you recommend using Quikrete Premium Clear Epoxy Coating? ?

I have a garage floor that i just finished epoxy painting. The finish was extremely dull. Yes uniform in color, but no luster at all. I purchased the Quikrete Premium Clear Epoxy Coating which is a high gloss epoxy finish. The instructions aren't very clear, it addresses applying this to a raw concrete floor (degrease %26amp; etch) and a existing painted floor (scrub w/ a pad, rinse and dry), but not necessarily a newly epoxy floor. Can I just apply after mixing A and B, letting it set and then rolling? I really don't want to tear up the work that i've just completed, yet i want to ensure the clear gloss sticks properly. Thanks expert painters.Would you recommend using Quikrete Premium Clear Epoxy Coating? ?
If your previous layer of paint is securely stuck then just scuff up the finish with about 120 grit sand paper, and I guaranty the clear will stick. Good Luck!

    Clear Epoxy Somethingg??

my friend wants top cast a book she has in like a clear epoxy so that its like suspended in the clear stuff...like...i dont know how to explain it...then shes gonna drill a hole in it and make it into a vasee...

what can she usee??Clear Epoxy Somethingg??
look at the root name of the link you posted. RESIN is the clear stuff that is used for encasing things it comes as a can of clear syrup and a small bottle of catalyst that is stirred in thoroughly and sets up hard. It is sold online, in hardware stores (casting resin) and hobby %26amp; craft shops like Michaels and Hobby Lobby. You will need to buy some and practice before you do something critical. There isn't any substitute and no way to make it at home. If you are really serious, it is cheaper to buy a gallon than 4 quarts and until you measure out what you need and add the catalyst it stores well.

I just paint my garage floor with Rust-Oleum Epoxy-shield. Is there a clear coat I can use on the floor now?

you need to use the Rust-Oleum Epoxy Shield Premium Clear Coating.

EPOXYShield庐 Premium Clear Coating is a 2-part high performance

epoxy for ultimate adhesion, durability and chemical resistance.

When used over other EPOXYShield庐 coatings, EPOXYShield庐

Wait 72 hours for the paint to cure. Apply 4 coats of ZEP high traffic floor finish using a grout sponge and 30 minutes between coats. Just pour the sealer on the floor and spread it around using the sponge. It is self leveling. Work your way out of the garage and place the sponge in a plastic bag between coats.

I hope you followed the directions to a t on the can of epoxy......etching.....priming and painting.I just paint my garage floor with Rust-Oleum Epoxy-shield. Is there a clear coat I can use on the floor now?
did you remove the original sealer and etch the floor if not you may have a problem with your paint sticking to the floor as for your clear coat you will need to rough up your new paint for the clear coat to stick otherwise it will peel off
Yes, Rust-Oleum makes a clear coat kit just for your application. Go to www.homedepot.com and punch in part# 225225. This kit sells for around $100 in my area.
I dont care what you put on it, hot tire pickup is gonna happen eventually, I am not going to do that anymore, going with the vinyl snap it system

We put the Epoxy Clear Coating on our garage floor over the Quikrete and it seems that it was too humid at the time. The white dried on our floor and it looks absolutely disgusting. Is there anything we can do to fix this?

The damage is done. You can shot blast to remove ( contact a concrete supply store) or purchase a colored epoxy and repaint. I am a painting contractor, that is what i recommend. Good luck

It's a no brainer to try coating the tank with a 2-part water-borne epoxy. It's fairly expensive to do, but it's without question the best investment you can make. Can I apply clear coat on top of epoxy paint on garage floor?

We purchase the epoxy kit but we did not mix A with B. My error. Now I want to protect my floor with some kind of a sealer or concrete protector so the paint wont peal off. My fear is would the sealer or clear coat can I apply on top of the paint. Recommendations please. I dont want to take the whole thing off and start all over again. ThanksCan I apply clear coat on top of epoxy paint on garage floor?
If you used just part A or B it will take forever, if ever dry. You sure can't put a sealer on it if the first coat isn't dry. Sorry, it's got to come off first. I suggest acetone. Have plenty of ventilation and a real big bunch of rags.

I used Rust-oleum Epoxy Shield Garage Floor & Clear Coating. Can I apply a second coat of the clear coating?

The orginial application of the clear coating did not coat evenly. There are dull areas of the garage floor that are not covered well.

Thank-youI used Rust-oleum Epoxy Shield Garage Floor %26amp; Clear Coating. Can I apply a second coat of the clear coating?
yep if its the same paint,I used Rust-oleum Epoxy Shield Garage Floor %26amp; Clear Coating. Can I apply a second coat of the clear coating?
yes you can it will soften the first coat (use the same product as the first) and it will dry.

Large knots in oak flooring, want to fill it with clear epoxy?

We bought new 5'; wide utility oak flooring, they have many imperfections from large 2'; knots with the depth of 3/4'; to the little knots. I know I can fill it with wood putty... question, can I use anything, like a clear liquid to keep the 3 dimension knots visible but would also take to polyurethane over it?

The small knots and imperfections will of course be filled to wood putty. The stain on the flooring with be a dark color.Large knots in oak flooring, want to fill it with clear epoxy?
2 part polyester resin will work- most hardware stores can get it for you. it's a resin %26amp; hardener mixture which will cure regardless of depth- i have used it for bars, countertops, cypress clocks, etc. it remains clear, and you can go over it with poly.Large knots in oak flooring, want to fill it with clear epoxy?
    Hi,

Oak flooring inherently does not have knots, if you fill the areas with a clear resin make sure you lightly sand the finish to allow the poly to adhere properly.
Don't: Fill the knots with ';Durhams'; rock hard wood putty. A powder but, fill the holes half way until you have about 1/4 inch left than fill to the top and sand. Allow at least overnight to solidify.
Epoxy will seal the wood. The stain won't penetrate.

There is a product called ';wood conditioner'; that is made for this.
Use the resin it's fast and cheap, but you have to work fast before it hardens.I suggest mixing a little at a time.
you can use resin it's available at most craft stores

Is there any way to buff out the grease film on a clear coat epoxy covered table top?

We believe that the manufacturer (or whomever apllied the clear coat epoxy resin) failed to put enough hardener in the mixture and instead of a clear 'glass-like' finish encasing the table tops

what we ended up with were table tops encased in a clear 'soft-n-tacky-like' finish which appears to have bonded with this greasy film and looks taerrible. Is there any way to buff out the grease film on a clear coat epoxy covered table top?
You can try wet sanding it or just strip and redo it.

How to encapsulate Bugs or other Stuff in clear Resin, epoxy or similar?

I need to know what material they use to encapsulate Bugs. Clear stuff. I want to encapsulate something that I have for someone as a gift but don't know what exactly it is that they use. It sort of preserves it for ever. So if you know what it is or where I can get it,, please let me know. ThanksHow to encapsulate Bugs or other Stuff in clear Resin, epoxy or similar?
Go to the art department of any major craft store like michael's, JoAnn's, or Hobby Lobby. You will find casting resin that even has pictures of what you are describing on the label. There are very detailed instructions on the label, make sure you follow them to the letter as different brands differ slightly, which is why I am NOT giving you step-by-steps here. Have fun!

  • Encapsulating flowers + such in clear epoxy, what do you..?

use for a mold that will allow the cured epoxy paperweight with the flower in it to break away and not look cloudy or rough? Do you have to polish it afterwards with automotive rubbing compound or whatever eyeglass places use on lenses?Encapsulating flowers + such in clear epoxy, what do you..?
I used a very light coat of WD40 and it came out fine. No polishing. The key is to go light. Spray a small amount on a rag, rub it like your trying to get it out of the mold instead of putting it into the mold. A light film is all it takes.

Where can I buy clear epoxy resin locally?

I am working on a small automotive project that requires an epoxy resin and hardener that dries clear and does not yellow. I looked at home depot already but had no clue what section to look in. I assume it is used in counter tops and flooring but I still have no idea where to start.

No Slip additive in Clear Epoxy floor covering - use it or not?

I just painted my garage floor with epoxy paint, and am about to clear coat it. I am debating using the non slip additive. On the one hand, it's a no slip additive, on the other hand I'm concerned about the floor being stibbled, and maybe shredding the sponge mop when it is cleaned. Experiences? Opinions? Thanks! No Slip additive in Clear Epoxy floor covering - use it or not?

I just sweep mine. I'd go with the non slip. There's nothing quite so painful as falling on your heiny on concrete.

What kind of glue keeps clear epoxy resin from yellowing?

I noticed that every time I use super glue to paste a picture down. Let it dry and then coat with the epoxy resin...the resin turns really yellow. I notice that it will do that with fast drying glues....

Do you know what is in the super glue that makes it do that? And what kind of fast drying glue will keep the resin from yellowing?

Thanks in advance. :)What kind of glue keeps clear epoxy resin from yellowing?
First, two-part *polyester* resins themselves (also called ';casting'; resins, like Cast 'N Craft) won't yellow as easily as hard-surface epoxy resins will (Envirotex Lite, etc.), but they'll both do it --especially over time from too much UV light, or from too high a heat while wet or while curing (try for 65-75 degrees), or even afterward if heated too high.

Also, *epoxy* resins can yellow (or ';amber';) just if they're more than 1/2'; in total thickness (...they can be poured no more than 1/8'; at a time).

You could try using Varathane (Diamond Elite, Gloss, water-washup --an acrylic finish for bare wood) instead if you're using only a thin layer of clear resin since Varathane has a UV protectant in it and acrylic finishes can also take some heat after curing.

As for gluing items down before adding resin, usually a permanent ';white glue'; is used ---but it can be a really *thin* coat (rub most off with finger), or even just a tiny dot or two, to speed up drying time ...those applications shouldn't take long to dry especially if they're in a reasonably warm area, or where there's some air circulation.

....Some papers and other porous materials require sealing with diluted white glue (4 to 1 water to glue) then drying so they won't become transparent when the resin is added or create extra air bubbles though... when you add the little bits of glue to those the backs of those surfaces, they might take a tad longer to dry --don't know.

You could also try holding the pictures down with a bit of ';spray adhesive'; on the back of the paper and see what happened, I guess.

I don't know why instant glues would cause the resin to yellow by themselves though, but probably have some chemical in them that reacts with the resin (unlike white glues would).

There's more info on both epoxy and polyester resins, and how to use them in various ways for casting in bottle tops, or for coating, etc., on this page of my site if you want to check it out:

    http://glassattic.com/polymer/other_mate鈥?/a>

Diane B.What kind of glue keeps clear epoxy resin from yellowing?
The owner of an epoxy products company told me a while ago that all clear epoxy putties will eventually yellow. I know that superglue and epoxy glue can influence eachother and to me it sounds like the superglue is accelerating the yellowing process.

Have you tried leaving the superglue a few days alone before applying the epoxy?

What is the reason for the epoxy by the way? Are you making something like a ';glass'; cover for the picture? Like you sometimes see with pendants? If you are only using the superglue to keep the picture in place while you are applying epoxy you could also experiment with other glues. For instance elmers (roughen the surface you apply it too) or a rubber glue.

Diane: that's a great website you have there!
